There are at least 25 different species of daffodils with over 13,000 hybrids. Each different daffodil has its own appeal. Probably the easiest and most dependable family of flowers, daffodils are ideal for a beginner in gardening.
Long lasting daffodil bulbs are unlike other bulbs that tend to dwindle and die out. After blooming let the daffodil plant rebuild its bulb for the next year. When the leaves begin to yellow, you should cut them off, but not before. To divide daffodil bulbs dig the bulbs when the foliage has yellowed. Separate them into individual bulbs and replant them about 6" apart and about 6" deep. You may replant immediately after lifting, or you may dry the bulbs in the shade, store them in mesh bags, and replant the bulbs in the Fall. (If you replant immediately - do not water them until the Fall.)
Visit your local or regional daffodil show in the spring. It is a excellent place to see many different types of daffodils. You can ask around and find out which varieties will do well in your part of the country.
